Calendar

The Hindu calendar, by tithi

Which tithi each festival falls on — true every year — and the kit each one needs. Confirm the Gregorian date against a panchang for your own city.

Dated guides

Dates we have checked

For these, the Gregorian dates are confirmed against published panchang sources and the sources are printed on the page.

How to read this

Each entry gives the tithi the rite falls on. That rule holds every year — the Gregorian date does not, because the calendar is lunisolar and the tithi is computed for a location. Look up the tithi below in a panchang for your own city, and order at least ten days before it.

Questions

About dates and tithis

Where we have checked the Gregorian dates against published panchang sources, we print them and name the sources — those are the dated pages above. For the rest we give the tithi, which is true every year, rather than a date we have not verified. A festival date depends on the tithi as computed for a location, and two panchangs for cities a few hundred kilometres apart can differ by a day.
