Karwa Chauth Vidhi & Katha — sargi to moonrise
Karwa Chauth is a single day, but it has three fixed points: the sargi eaten before sunrise, the katha read in the afternoon or evening, and the moonrise. Everything else varies by family and region.
This is the sequence printed on the card inside our Karwa Chauth Kit.
In this order
- The fast is nirjala — without water — from sunrise until moonrise, and should not be attempted against medical advice.
- Moonrise time differs by city, sometimes by more than half an hour. Check for your own location.
- The karwa is filled with water before the puja and its water is used for the arghya at moonrise.
- Where a family follows sargi from the mother's side rather than the mother-in-law's, follow your own tradition.
This sequence is verified by a practising purohit and checked by a second from a different tradition. Practice still varies by region, sampradaya and family — where yours differs, follow your own tradition. Muhurat and tithi should be confirmed against a panchang calculated for your city. Nothing here promises an outcome.
About this vidhi
Moonrise on Karwa Chauth differs by city and can vary by more than thirty minutes across north India. Check a panchang for your own location on the day; do not use a time published for another city.
